ONE DAY WORKSHOPS
Body Centered Gestalt Therapy
Saturday, November 18 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Body centered therapy is a way to create and heighten awareness of the truth of our body. The history or how we became who are now is recorded in our body--in how we move: how we hold ourselves: what we can feel. As we become aware of what our body has to tell us we can begin our process of ownershop and change.
Body centered therapy is similar in many ways to traditional body work, but does not require physical contact between therapist and client. There will be experiential exercises to develop body sensation and awareness and opportunity to work on personal issues. Casual clothing is recommended.
Participants will learn:
* A body centered understaning of the Gestalt cycle of experience
* How to develop body sensation through language, breath movement and posture
* How to recognize the language of the body
* How to recognize and work with the energy system
* The role bodily awareness plays in spiritural growth
Mr. Evans has worked in the field for over thirty years as a therapist, treatment program consultant, and clinical director. Twelve years were devoted to working on the Navajo and Gila River reservations. Barry has studied Zen and worked with Sufi teachers. He has experience in Chinese Animal Form Movement and in Sufi drumming and breathing exercises. His therapy emphasizes mental clarity and bodily awareness as keys to spiritual development.

SPECIAL INTEREST WORKSHOPS
Working With Body: Gestalt Therapy and Embodiment
A Workshop For Therapists
Leader: Michael Clemmens PhD
Saturday, February 10, 2007 10:00 AM - 530 PM
Sunday, February 11, 2007 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Our work with clients is most effective when the whole of our mutual experience is available. It is attention to bodily aspects of experience that distinguishes Gestalt Therapy from other approaches. In this workshop we will explore how to attend to and work with client’s physical process as both the figure and ground for deep experiential change.
The format of this workshop will be experiential, didactic and practice sessions. The emphasis will be on demonstrating and practicing skills in attending to client’s body experience. Participants should be prepared to engage in practice sessions as part of the learning.
The workshop is limited to 18 participants and is appropriate for therapists/clinicians only.
Michael Clemmens is a psychologist and trainer based in Pittsburgh, Pa. He teaches Gestalt and body oriented approaches to therapy as a member of the faculty of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and at the Esalen Institute and Metanoia Institute in London. He is the Author of Getting Beyond Sobriety published by Analytic Press and “Culture and Body” published in Bridges (Sage Publication). Working With Body: Gestalt Therapy and Embodiment

A theory seminar is also presented by the training faculty to acquaint attendees with the theory and philosophy of Gestalt Therapy.

THEORY SEMINARS
THEORY OF GESTALT THERAPY SEMINARS
An understanding of the theoretical foundations of Gestalt Therapy is integral to mastering its intuitive approach and to applying its techniques. And Gestalt techniques, by their very nature, inherently support the theory of the therapy. Through lecture, discussion and structured exercises, this series of 4 three-hour seminars will present the basic principles, central concepts and core attitudes of Gestalt Therapy Theory.
Gestalt Theory I: The Foundation (Gestalt Experience)
Central to Gestalt Therapy is a theory which views healthy individuals as organisms seeking a natural balance of healthy functioning. Gestalt honors each individuals striving toward this balance and their personal expertise in promoting self growth and development. In this seminar we will present the theoretical constructs for understanding human behavior and how it informs the Gestalt treatment approach. Participants will learn:
* The Gestalt model of Organismic-Self-Regulation
* The Gestalt concepts of Awareness and Contact
* Gestalt Formation and the Gestalt Experience Cycle

Gestalt Theory II: The Process (Here and Now)
Unlike the medical model of illness, Gestalt views human behavior as the organism's creative attempt to adapt. Whether healthy or unhealthy, or with awareness or not, the organism continues to pursue balance. Our purpose in this seminar is to view the Gestalt Therapy formulations about human dis-ease, or less than optimal adaptation, which keeps one out of balance. Participants will learn:
* How human distress and neuroses develop in the Gestalt model of Functioning
* Resistances to Contact as Projection, Introjection, Retroflection, Deflection and Confluence
* The Paradoxical Theory of Change

Gestalt Theory III: The Relationship (I and Thou)
During the therapeutic encounter, the Gestalt therapist fosters reciprocal relationships with clients. This involves insisting on and supporting each client's responsibility for self while acknowledging and utilizing the therapist's own personhood. In this seminar, we will explore the principles of interactions between the Gestalt therapist and client. Participants will learn:
* To understand I-Thou relating
* To describe the Five Layers of Personality
* The definition of Responsibility

Gestalt Theory IV: The Experiment (What and How)
Gestalt learning occurs through experiencing and doing. Change in Gestalt Therapy results from increasing awareness of one's personal process, or how we experience our way of being in contact with both the self and the environment. In this seminar we will review classic Gestalt techniques and the fundamentals of customizing therapeutic experiments. Participants will learn:
* To define and recognize Unfinished Business
* The concepts of Polarities and Integration
* How to construct experiments for experiential learning

Grace became connected with the Gestalt Institute after obtaining her Master's Degree in Counseling from Arizona State University in 1992. Successful treatment for cancer had been the impetus to follow a life long passion for psychology and personal change. She was introduced to Gestalt Therapy during her internship and found a method which helped clients transform their emotional patterns as well as cognitive thinking.
She describes lasting emotional change developing in three stages: 1. debriefing, discovering emotional defense mechanisms that keep a person living life with outmoded constraints; 2. working through these constraints both cognitively and emotionally with Gestalt Therapy; and, 3. integrating new patterns of emotional understanding and feeling through the Gestalt experience.
Grace has adopted Gestalt Therapy to work with chemical dependents and
their families while working both at Charter and Banner Desert
Behavioral Health Hospitals. She has had a private practice at the
Gestalt Institute for the last 8 years. "I joined the faculty at that
time which has given me the opportunity to grow in my understanding and
practice of Gestalt Therapy through teaching, supervising practicum and
interactions with knowledgeable colleagues."
Grace's areas of special focus are persons facing illness, the chemically
dependent and their families, and people suffering from anxiety
disorders and phobias. Grace can be reached at 602-882-7184 for
