YEAR ONE TRAINING • YEAR TWO TRAINING • SUMMER RESIDENTIAL
We know that universities do a good job of providing a foundation and background in understanding the basic theories of human behavior. Beyond that, learning how to do the nitty-gritty, nuts and bolts of therapy is what we teach in several major ways. First, our trainees observe how to do Gestalt Therapy by watching the training faculty, who have been doing therapy for many years. These demonstrations provide the trainee with an opportunity to learn the hidden skills of doing therapy, to discuss why the work was done in a particular way, to ask as many questions as possible so they thoroughly understand what is done.
Next we give the trainees an opportunity to work as therapist with their fellow trainees under the careful guidance of the training faculty. Supervision is done on the spot so that trainees are able to instantly receive feedback regarding what they are doing well and what needs attention. We hope to help trainees develop their own unique style while being true to the principles of Gestalt Therapy.
Lastly, trainees conclude their training by being the lead therapist in our Drop-In Group. This is an open therapy group attended by anyone from the community who wishes to participate and offers trainees a hands on training experience with people who are unsophisticated in the Gestalt approach. After each two hour group, trainees are given extensive feedback and supervision by the training supervisor who observed in the group. Our main goal in the training program is to help ensure the possibility of trainee success
